The JN.1 variant, a sub-lineage of the Omicron variant, has been classified as a 'variant of interest' by the WHO. It is highly transmissible and has become the most prevalent strain in the US, accounting for over 44% of cases. In India, 541 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant have been reported as of January 3, with Karnataka and Kerala reporting the highest counts.
Experts have noted that the JN.1 variant primarily causes mild symptoms similar to a common cold, affecting the upper respiratory tract, and stress that the overall risk is low. However, it is more transmissible and could potentially lead to an increase in the overall number of cases, including in children, who can contract and spread the virus, although they are less likely to develop severe illness.
Preventive steps recommended include encouraging eligible individuals to get vaccinated, with booster doses also advisable where eligible, and annual vaccination against the flu virus. Hygiene practices such as regular handwashing, use of hand sanitizers, and good respiratory hygiene are emphasized, as well as the encouragement of children above two years to wear masks, particularly in crowded or high-risk settings. Social distancing and regular testing, especially in areas with a surge in cases, are also important preventive measures.
It's important for individuals to stay informed about the current situation, follow public health guidelines, and seek medical advice when necessary. Regular monitoring of updates from reliable sources like the WHO and national health agencies is also recommended.
