In order to remove a tumor blocking the entry to a patient's voice box, a rare trans-oral robotic surgery was performed by doctors of Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital.

Anil Mehta, an 84-year-old South Mumbai resident, had a large 2.5cm x2.5 cm tumour blocking the entry to his voice box. Doctors removed it without a single incision. Mehta had difficulty in swallowing food and water. His breathing was laboured, and his voice cracked very often.

Speaking about the tumor, Dr Vijay Haribhakti said, "The large size of the tumour occupied the entire epiglottis, as well as a portion of the base tongue. The patient had a cardiac history and is diabetic too. His health condition made him a high-risk patient for open surgery. We, therefore, suggested Trans-Oral Robotic Supraglottic Laryngectomy,"

A Trans-Oral Robotic Supraglottic Laryngectomy allows a surgeon to remove a tumour completely without disturbing surrounding tissues. An extremely rare surgery, it needs no cuts or incisions and enables the surgeon to remove the tumour in one piece without damaging any neighboring tissues or muscles.

Dharmesh Mehta, son of the patient Anil Mehta, said, "My father's age made it difficult to withstand an open surgery. His tumour was diagnosed a month before his surgery.

While we visited a few doctors, we were mostly suggested open surgery. Looking at his age, we wanted to opt for a surgery which won't put him at risk. The robotic surgery is precise and took less time." Haribhakti said.

The highly complicated surgery was performed in less than an hour. And three days after the surgery, Mehta was sitting in his bed and talking without his voice cracking.
