Surgical Oncology

Dr P Jagannath is a consultant in the Surgical Oncology department at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai. After graduating from Kurnool Medical College, he pursued postgraduate residency in General Surgery at JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research) and obtained MS (General Surgery) from University of Madras.

Dr. Jagannath has over 30 years’ experience in the field of Surgical Oncology and is the pioneer in Hepato Biliary Pancreatic Surgery in India. He also introduced advanced techniques of sphincter conservation and staplers in gastrointestinal surgery. Prior to his association with our hospital, he worked in Tata Memorial Hospital as a Surgeon, and later as the Professor of Surgical Oncology & Chief, Gastrointestinal Service in Tata Memorial Centre. He was also a consultant in Jaslok Hospital for six years. He then joined as Chairman of Surgical Oncology at Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre.

Dr Jagannath has published a work on the association of gall bladder diseases and water pollution in a cluster of villages in the Northern Gangetic belt, where the incidence of gallbladder cancer is high. He is the Principal Editor of the book ‘Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery: Current Concepts’ (2002) and co-authored several books including ‘Recent Advances in Surgery.’

Dr Jagannath is the President of International Hepato Pancreato Biliary Association (IHPBA) and was instrumental in the initiation of the Indian chapter of IHPBA. He is a winner of the Life Time Achievement Award by the Association of Colorectal Surgery. Well-known for his community service, he started the website “www.indiacancer.org” for public awareness. He also established a charitable trust, ‘Crusade against Cancer Foundation’ that offers financial assistance to cancer patients, especially children.
