In common parlance and especially in movies, the term Leukemia is often equated with a terminal illness and death. That often is not the case. Incremental and sometimes dramatic improvements in the treatment of this cancer and management of the side effects of the treatment have ensured a hope for long term survival for many patients. The term Leukemia means white blood (leuk + aemia). It is often but not always associated with a high White blood cell count. Leukemia is a term used for several different diseases. Broadly these can be divided into acute and chronic types with a further subdivision based on the cell of origin.
Symptoms can be non-specific such as persistent fatigue, fevers, bleeding from the gums or nose. Some times this is picked up coincidentally during routine blood tests for some other reason.
There is no preventative modality for Leukemias.
